PhD scholarship opportunity: Melbourne

PhD Scholarship: Qualitative research on injecting drug use in Melbourne

 

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST

The National Drug Research Institute (NDRI) invites expressions of interest from suitably qualified candidates for a PhD scholarship in qualitative research on injecting drug use in Melbourne. The project is one component of an NHMRC-funded Centre for Research Excellence on Injecting Drug Use. The collaborative, multidisciplinary centre involves researchers from NDRI; the Burnet Institute; the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre; the Kirby Institute; Turning Point Alcohol and Drug Centre; and the University of Queensland.

 

The scholarship carries an annual tax-free stipend of $29,424 a year for three years. The scholarship will start as soon as possible and is based at NDRI’s Melbourne office, located at Turning Point Alcohol and Drug Centre in Fitzroy. There is also possibility of additional paid work.

DUAL DIAGNOSES FAMILY CLINICIAN

Full-Time Position

Salary range $58K to $64K negotiable depending on qualifications, skills and experience, plus superannuation and attractive salary packaging.

The Family Eclipse Program is an innovative service working with individuals (16-24 years) who have a co-occurring mental health and alcohol and other drug disorder and their families.

The successful applicant will ideally possess all following requirements. However, understanding this is a new area of expertise, those possessing experience in one or more of the following areas will be considered: mental health, AOD treatment; family work.

 

The Family Eclipse Program was first funded as an innovative response to youth mental health concerns in 2007 and has received continued funding since.  The program uses family based interventions to enhance current treatment of an individual’s dual disorder.   The aim is to increase positive outcomes for the whole family inclusive of the person with the dual disorder and includes psycho-education and symptom management strategies. Interventions will aim to reduce stress, improve family communication and problem solving skills and to generally reduce the negative influence of mental health and drug abuse on individual and family life. An outcome evaluation aims to provide valuable results of the program’s success.

 

Odyssey House Victoria is the lead agency for this project in partnership with Interact Australia and Task Force Inc.  This is a full-time position until June 2014. An extension beyond this is subject to the project funding being continued.

  • ·        Undertake high quality research and policy analysis
  • ·        Maintain and develop strong working relationships with key stakeholders including government representatives and health professional bodies to further agreed positions
  • ·        Undertake reporting requirements

The Weigelli Centre is an Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol rehabilitation facility just outside Cowra in the Central West of NSW.

 

  1. 1.       Clinical Supervisor

 

The Weigelli Centre wishes to engage an external supervisor to provide regular staff Clinical Supervision sessions (19 hours per month,  flexibly).

The Clinical Supervisor will have the following skill set:

–     Post graduate qualifications in Social Work or Psychology

–     Extensive clinical experience with clients with substance misuse and comorbid mental health disorders

–     Demonstrated clinical competencies in the delivery of best practice,  evidence-based,  contemporary Assessment and Treatment models

–     Demonstrated high level of cultural competence in working with Aboriginal communities and organizations

–     Demonstrated understanding of the role and function of Clinical Supervision

The Community and Family Support Team will expand the Weigelli Centre programme and the following staff are sought:

 

  1. Team Leader

This senior position will manage the team.  The person will have appropriate qualifications,  team management experience,  case management experience and be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate,  support and run community development activities appropriate to the programme.  Problem solving skills,  initiative and a demonstrated excellent work ethic are essential.

 

  1. 3.      Field Worker (Alcohol and Other Drugs)

This position will work to facilitate access for Aboriginal men,  women ,  and their families,  to appropriate AOD treatment.  The person will have appropriate qualifications,  casework experience,  experience working with Indigenous clients with AOD and MH issues,  experience providing community AOD interventions.  Problem solving skills,  initiative and a demonstrated excellent work ethic are essential.

The Closing the Gap National Partnership Agreement (NPA) Indigenous Early Childhood Development (IECD) Element 2 has been established to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal pregnant women in the perinatal period, their children and families who are ‘at risk’ or vulnerable to either mental health and/or drug and alcohol  issues.

 

The aims of this initiative are:

To increase access and improve identification and early intervention for Aboriginal pregnant women and their families who are ‘at risk’ or vulnerable to mental health and/or drug and alcohol issues

To strengthen the structures, procedures and processes that support best practice and effective continuum of care between community antenatal care providers, hospitals and back to the community providers following birth

 

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of an innovative service supporting Aboriginal pregnant women, their children and families. These positions will be co located at and work in close partnership with their local Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Health Service (AMIHS); provide prevention and early intervention mental health and/or drug and alcohol services; engage with the local Aboriginal community and develop linkages with a range of local specialist and general health services.

The Catalyst program is an evidence based intensive 6 week non-residential structured program which incorporates individual and, group work focusing on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, motivational enhancement, strengthening family relationships, recreation and socialisation activities.

 

We are seeking an experienced AOD Clinician to join our team. To be successful in the role you will have relevant tertiary qualifications preferably Social Work, certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs Work or 4 key competencies in AOD, qualifications in dual diagnosis or willingness to undertake, as well as demonstrated experience working with AOD or dual diagnosis clients.

CLINICAL MANAGER

Karralika Programs operates a range of programs, including the Solaris Therapeutic Community (in a corrective services setting), The Karralika adult and child & family Therapeutic  Communities, The Nexus Program (incorporating the Men’s Halfway House Program and After-care Program), the Early Birds Program, and drink drug driving education programs.
